Avonne Allen Hartshorn

Avonne Allen Hartshorn, 92, died October 13, 2016. Avonne was born in Washington, D.C. She graduated from George Washington University in 1946. She lived for 30 years in Wayne, Pennsylvania, and later in retirement for 30 years in Savannah, Georgia.

Avonne enjoyed a life-long love of learning. She graduated in 1981 from the Barnes Foundation Horticulture Education Program in Merion, Pennsylvania. She was an avid reader and continued to take courses at The Learning Center in Savannah until shortly before her death. She was also an enthusiastic traveler. She toured all 50 states and traveled extensively in six continents. She was a member of Wayne Presbyterian Church and then Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church in Savannah.

She is survived by her beloved children Dana Sassaman, Amy Hartshorn, Laura (Walter) Elliott and John Allen (Susie) Hartshorn, and her dear grandchildren Calvin (Megan) Sassaman, Will (Gretchen), John, and Eliza Elliott, and Ben and Caroline Hartshorn. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 55 years John Elden Hartshorn and her grandson Len Sassaman. -

Memorial services will be held at 3pm, Sunday, October 30, 2016 at Skidaway Presbyterian Church, 50 Diamond Causeway, Savannah, GA 31411. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Senior Citizens, Inc.-The Learning Center, 3025 Bull Street, Savannah, Georgia 31405.
