Ava Nelle Carter Bentley

Ava Nelle Carter Bentley, of Lake Park, passed away at her home after an extended illness, Saturday, September 16, 2006 at 6:45p.m. Mrs. Bentley was born in Lowndes County on May 9, 1924, and attended Lake Park Schools. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, James A. and Iler Carter, three sisters, Thelma Zipperer, Gladys Copeland, Verda Carter, three brothers, Darvin, Hubert, and Harley Carter and one son, Gary W. Bentley.

Mrs. Bentley’s professional career consisted of a position as a bookkeeper and the first police woman hired by the city of Valdosta, while living on West Alden Avenue. She was President of the Valdosta Evening Lioness Club from 1978- 1979. Her most enjoyable activity was teaching with the World Bible School while attending Central Avenue Church of Christ. A devoted Christian, member of Dasher Church of Christ and mother, she will never be forgotten.

Survivors are her husband of 62 plus years, Henry E. Bentley, Jr., two sons, Henry E. Bentley, III, David E. Bentley, Sr., and his wife, Becky, eleven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, one sister, Leila Gossett of Lakeland, Florida, and a multitude of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m., Tuesday, September 19th at Carson McLane Funeral Home, 2215 N. Patterson St., Valdosta. The funeral will take place on Wednesday, September 20, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Mr. David Nelson and Mr. Gordon Teffeteller presiding. Final rights will be at Riverview Memorial Gardens. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Georgia Christian School, 4359 Dasher Road, Valdosta, GA 31601-2101.
