AVA NELL RIGGS, 70, of Griffin, formerly of Valdosta, passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at the Christian Ministries Hospice, Griffin, after a lengthy illness.
Ava Nell was born March 22, 1939 in Remerton, a daughter of the late Corley John and Sallie Jane DeLoach Brantley. She was employed at SAFT for twenty-three years, retiring in 1997 from quality control, and had been a President of the local IBEW Union. She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and loved to sing with the choir. Ava Nell loved her grandchildren, and enjoyed crocheting, puzzles, and keeping in touch on "Facebook".
She is survived by her husband, Bobby Riggs of Griffin; three children, Timmy Courson of Valdosta, Sharon Johnson and husband David of Lake Park, and Janet Daniels and husband Greg of Valdosta; four grandchildren, Trey O'Neal, Jake, Josh and Robbie Daniels, all of Valdosta; two sisters, Nita Mae Weeks of Valdosta, and Maxine Espick and husband Ron of Niles, MI; one brother, Ralph Brantley and wife Lynn of Valdosta; two sisters-in-law, Grace Brantley of Remerton, and Jeannie Brantley of Valdosta; many nieces and nephews; four step-children, Robert and wife Julie Riggs of Griffin, James and wife Barbara Riggs of Apple Valley, CA, John and wife Terri Riggs of Apple Valley, CA, and Rosemarie and husband George Palmer of Savannah; ten step-grandchildren, Robbie Riggs, Matthew Riggs, Tara Riggs, Alyssa Riggs, Brittany Rose Riggs, Tyler Riggs, Jacinda Rose Riggs, Kaylynn Riggs, Serena Palmer, and Leevi Palmer. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Jerry Dean Courson, Sr.; three sisters, Inez Brantley Lee, Melba Brantley Williams, and Martha Ann Brantley Jones; and three brothers, Milton "Bubba" Brantley, Leonard Brantley, and Ronnie Brantley.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Riggs will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, January 16, 2010, at the Chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home of Valdosta, with Rev. Loyce "Buddy" Walker officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery. Mrs. Riggs' family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Friday at the funeral home. Please consider memorial contributions to Mt.
