AUDREY MOORE BASS
April 6, 1922 June 24, 2011
Audrey Moore Bass could grow a bare stick into a fruit tree, catch fish where no one else could, take a look at a high-end dress and duplicate it on her home sewing machine, and hunt alligators and bobcats all while being mother to eight children.
Mrs. Bass, 89, the widow of Dallas S. Moore and Shellie O. Bass, died Friday at Langdale Hospice House following complications from a broken hip.
Mrs. Bass started fishing as a child and was adept at gutting and frying up her catch. As an adult, she hunted alligators, bobcats and other wildlife with Mr. Moore, the father of her children.
Her one-acre yard in the Dasher area flourishes with fruit trees, vegetables and flowers Mrs. Bass planted, maintained and shared with friends. Yet, she was best known for her singing and sewing.
In a voice she could modulate as alto or soprano, Mrs. Bass sang hymns and country and western songs around the house, was a soloist at Good Hope Baptist Church in Naylor, where she had been a member since she was 14, and performed with the Valdosta Choral Guild.
When her children were growing up, her familys nightly entertainment was to gather around the porch swing of their Johnson Street house in Valdosta and join in song accompanied by her on the guitar, to the delight and enjoyment of their neighbors.
Mrs. Bass was a striking woman always stylishly dressed. She cut her own patterns and sewed clothes for herself, her childrenmainly her five daughtersand women in Valdosta who admired her skill. She had managed the fabric departments of several Valdosta stores.
Her happy outlook on life could give way to a fiery temper which abated in a flash. She always had a fun word for anyone she encountered and bore her lifes losses with grace: the deaths of two husbands, daughters Barbarine Moore and LaVonne Moore Krollman, and granddaughter Leisha Moore.
Survivors include four daughters, LaWanna Moore Lennington of Valdosta, Jeannette Moore (Bill) Parr of San Diego, CA, Idella Moore of Smyrna, and Bazlyn Moore (Bob) Collins of Vinings; two sons, Robert S. Moore of West Palm Beach, FL, and Dallas (Pat) Moore of Cumming; her stepchildren, Karen Bass (Tommy) Bearden of Rising Fawn, Vonnie Bass (Buddy) Hall of West Point, TX, Kevin (Angela) Bass of Zodiak, AK; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral is at 2 p.m. Sunday at Good Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. A.M. Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the family plot at the church cemetery. Visitation is 4-6 p.m. today at Carson McLane Funeral Home in Valdosta. Memorial contributions may be made Langdale Hospice House, 2263 Pineview Drive, Valdosta, GA 31602. www.mclanecares.com
