Audrey G. Purcell, 90, of Valdosta passed away Monday, September 20, 2021 at South Georgia Medical Center. She was born in Shelby, NC on August 18th, 1931 to the late Bluford “Boots” Garrett and Serletia Williams Garrett. Mrs. Purcell had a long and involved career in administrative, accounting, and business services that included many years in an officer’s level position with Civil Service at Moody AFB (where she also advocated for NARFE), and also at Valdosta High School for a number of years. During this time period she was a devoted military wife and mother taking care of her family during the cold war and Vietnam eras. She was also a member of First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Purcell was very involved in her community and enjoyed hosting progressive dinners and working to better the neighborhood in which she lived. In her infrequent spare time Mrs. Purcell enjoyed square dancing, clogging, hydrangeas, cooking and traveling with her friends. And, she loved to sew and made her clothes and her children’s. In short, everything in her life was about serving others and giving a better life to those around her.
Mrs. Purcell is survived by her daughter, Toni P. Fillyaw of Valdosta, son, Paul Purcell (Frances) of Douglasville, granddaughters, Perri Millsaps (Zackery) of Naylor and Jarrett Fillyaw of Tallahassee, great grandchildren, Rance Millsaps, Ansley Millsaps and Blakely Millsaps, sister, Linda Garrett Mitchell (Richard) of Daytona Beach, FL and niece, Claire Brubaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene “Gene” Purcell on July 21, 2003.
A graveside memorial service and burial will be Thursday, September 23, 2021 at eleven a. m. in the Veteran’s Section of McLane’s Riverview Memorial Gardens.
