Arthur Stitt Mixson

Arthur Stitt Mixson (Joe to all), age 65 of Valdosta, Georgia, passed away on August 23, 2013 at his home. Visitation will be at 1:00 PM with funeral services held at 2:00 PM on Monday, August 26, 2013 at Carson McLane Funeral Home on Patterson Street. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation 5582 Peachtree Road Atlanta GA 30341 or to First United Methodist Church PO Box 1306 Valdosta GA 31603-1306.


Joe was born in Valdosta to Dr. and Mrs. Joyce F. Mixson, Jr. on October 29, 1947 and graduated from high school in Dasher, GA. Joe proudly served in the Navy during the Vietnam era. He also volunteered and was very active at First United Methodist Church of Valdosta. He was known as a huge fan of the Valdosta Wildcats and a student of trains and history. He was a proud President of the Lions Club, a great fisherman, and most importantly an amazingly loyal and loving son, brother and uncle. He had a great sense of humor, many friends, and the love of all of his family.


Joe Mixson is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Joyce F.Mixson, Jr. and Mrs. Elizabeth S. Mixson.

Joe is survived by a large loving family including his siblings and their spouses – John and Betty Sue Bickerstaff of Jacksonville, Florida, Dr. William and Virginia Story of Shelby, North Carolina, Joyce F. and Dr. Elizabeth Mixson, III of Lakemont, Georgia as well as his admiring nieces and nephews – Steven Spraker, Susan Harbin, Beth Story, Suzie Lowe, Nicole Bateman, Fredanel Story, Joyce F. Mixson IV and Charles Mixson and many cousins, grand nieces and grand nephews.
