Arthur "Buddy" Hughes, 79, of Valdosta, passed away on Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at Heritage House Nursing Home after a brief illness.
He was born November 22, 1932 in Lowndes County, the youngest child of the late Arthur and Lula Lightsey Hughes. He graduated from Pine Grove High School with the Class of 1950 and was an accomplished player with the Twin Rivers Baseball League. Following his honorable service with the U.S. Navy, he was employed at Langdale Forest Products for thirty-four years, retiring in 1995 as Saw Mill Supervisor. Mr. Hughes was of the Baptist faith, enjoyed visiting with family and friends, and gardening.
He is survived by his four children, Michael Hughes and wife Jackie, Lorraine Hughes Green, Bruce Hughes, and Sharon Smith and husband Mike, all of Valdosta; eight grandchildren, Michael Hughes, Jr. and Tiffany, Buddy Hughes, Catherine Hughes, Taylor McDowell, Trevor Green, Mechelle, Randi and Dalton Smith; three great-grandchildren, A.J., Charlie and Cheyenne Hughes; two sisters, Bonnie Carter of Lake Park, and Eunice Glisson of Dasher; many nieces and nephews; and his canine companions, Spot and Belle. He was preceded in death by a son, Winston Hughes; two brothers, Lawton and L.A. Hughes; and five sisters, Alberta Hughes, Elsie Carter, Maydele Deloach, Ruthie McGrath and Hazelene Newsome.
The Funeral Service for Mr. Hughes will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 23, 2012, in the Chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home, with Mr. Marty Broome officiating. Interment will follow at Carter Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
