Alma Jean Sumner, 85, of Tifton, passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2018 following a brief illness. She was born on March 9, 1932 in Statenville to the late Eugene and Lily Mae Carter. She attended Corinth Freewill Baptist Church in Brookfield. Mrs. Sumner enjoyed cooking and fishing. She loved working in her yard. Friends and family remember her as a matter of fact lady. Mrs. Sumner was retired from Crackin Good Bakery after 30 years of service and then became a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, William James Sumner of Tifton; daughter, Patricia Grace Coody of Valdosta; stepchildren, William James (Darlene) Sumner, Jr., Virginia Mae Sumner, Tommy Watson (Sarah) Sumner, Mike Anthony (Rhonda) Sumner all of Tifton; 21 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren; brother, Reverend Donnie (Wanda) Carter; sister, Carolyn (Mack) Shiver; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Randall Carter, Harry Carter, and Billy Carter; first husband, Johnny Earl Wheeler; second husband, A.J. Boutwell; and three children, Gary Eugene Wheeler, Johnny Earl Wheeler, Jr., and William Mikell Wheeler.
Services for Alma Jean Sumner will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 in the chapel of the McLane Lakewood Funeral Home. Reverend Donnie Carter will officiate. Burial will follow at Carter Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at McLane Lakewood Funeral Home. Condolences to the family may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com.
