ALEX ANSEL HENDRY, 76, of Valdosta died Friday, September 29, 2006 at his home. He was born on April 26, 1930 in Cook County to the late Guy C. and Florrie Hendry and had lived in Valdosta since 1973. He graduated from Sparks High School in 1947 and Abraham Baldwin in 1949 where he was a member of the basketball team during the National Jr. College Tournament in 1949. Mr. Hendry graduated from the University of Georgia in 1951 with a degree in Agricultural Economics. He served two years in the U. S. Army in Germany after college. After serving in the U. S. Army he became a partner in Lindsey and Daughtrey Plant Company for twenty years. During this time he spent several falls and winters in Cuba, the Bahaman Islands, and Haiti tending the company’s agricultural interest there. In 1973 he formed Cecil Farms and in 1984 he reorganized the company into Valdosta Plant Company. He remained there until he retired from active farming to do light consultant work in 2005. The most important event in his life was when he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1974. After that he enjoyed the peace only salvation can bring. He is a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church where he served several years as a Sunday School teacher and deacon.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Smith Hendry of Valdosta, one daughter and son in law, Melissa and Peter Epes of Valdosta, four sons and three daughters in law, Mickey and Marcy Burns of Valdosta, Danny and Mary Burns of Hahira, Dale Burns of Atlanta and Chris and Emily Hendry of Macon, his grandchildren, Gabriel Burns, Mary Catherine Burns, Heather Epes, Ashley Burns, Lori Burns, Ben Burns, Alyson Burns, Emily Burns and Jackson Hendry, one sister and brother in law, Louise and Charles Mathis of Anthony, Fla.; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mitchell and Lota Smith and Morris Smith all of Valdosta.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Miller and three brothers, J. T. (Buck) Daughtrey, Zeke Daughtrey and Bill Hendry.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 2, 2006 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Pastor Ike Jefferson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
