Samuel D. Register, Jr.

November 10, 1931 — April 27, 2013

Samuel D. Register, Jr., 81, of Valdosta died on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Lakehaven Nursing Home following a period of declining health. He was born in Valdosta on November, 10, 1931 to the late Samuel, Sr., and Vernelle Patten Register. Sam played for the Valdosta Wildcats during high school and was inducted into the Valdosta High School Sport's Hall of Fame in 2008. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in the Quatermaster Corps. He attended Mercer University and received his Master's Degree from Georgia Southern. He retired from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) immunization division of the Georgia Department of Human Resources. Sam taught Sunday school for over 34 years and was a Scout Master for 14 years with First Baptist Church. He was awarded the Silver Beaver, the highest award attained for a Scout Master. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Shirley Swain Register of Valdosta; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dave and Ann Register of Maumelle, Arkansas, Rick and Anne Register of Dothan, Alabama, and Rob and Denise Register of Powder Springs, Georgia; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Amy Register of Little Rock, Arkansas, Ben and Jenny Register of Maumelle, Arkansas, Haley and Kyle Hancock of Madison, Mississippi, Katlyn and Drew Bronson, and Allen Register all of Dothan, Alabama, Robert Register and Laura Register both of Nashville, Tennessee; two great-grandchildren, Lauren Register and Haven Register both of Maumelle, Arkansas; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Barbara Register of College Park, Georgia.

Services for Sam Register will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 29, 2013 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Mac Weaver officiating. The burial will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
