Raymond E. Sellars, 76, of Valdosta died on Thursday, December 12, 2013 in Monticello, Florida following a period of declining health. He was born in Lowndes County on November 29, 1937 to the late John Lamar, Sr. and Sallie Mae Byrd Sellars. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in Germany with the Military Police. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he served as a police officer with the Plant City Police Department in Plant City, Florida for 13 years before being promoted to detective. After moving back home to Valdosta, he was involved with many successful businesses a few of which include the logging industry with his brother and was the owner/operator of Tires Unlimited. He spent his retirement years with family and friends and enjoyed fishing, barbequing and stock car racing. Mr. Sellars was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Eva Grimsley of Valdosta; a daughter, Priscilla Grimsley of Adel; son and daughter-in-law Mitchell and Laurel Sellars of Palm City, Florida; daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen and Eddie Rafter of Lake Park, Debbie and Mark Hall of Monticello, Florida, and Darlene Johnson of Lake Park; grandchildren, Bradley Purvis, Chris Vickery, Erin Tyle, Alex Varnum, Amber Vickery, Morgan Sellars, Zach Varnum, Hailey Sellars, Jaycee Holmes, Jaylene Eddy, Brett Rafter, Josh Eddy, Sarah Hall, Carl Hall, Alessa-Brooke Rooney, and Aiden Rafter; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Louise DeLoach of Hahira; a brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Milton and Pat Sellars of Valdosta; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two wives, Sarah Sellars and Bernice Sellars, a brother, J.L. Sellars and a brother-in-law, Jim Hughes.
Services for Raymond E. Sellars will be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Milton Sellars and Rev. Buck Crumley officiating. The burial will follow in the Poplar Springs Cemetery in Berrien County. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
